Puppy and kitten vaccination schedule in Nepal, and what it costs

The vaccine schedule Kathmandu clinics publish for puppies and kittens, week by week, how it compares with the WSAVA guidelines, and what the injections cost in Nepal.

Puppies and kittensFirst dose at 6 to 8 weeks

This guide is general information, not veterinary advice. Your vet knows your animal; follow them.

A new puppy comes home at eight weeks with a card that says “1st vaccine done” and nothing else. Which vaccine? When is the next one? Is rabies separate? This page lays out what clinics in Kathmandu publish, what the international guidelines say, and what it costs, so you know what to ask at the first visit.

We are a marketplace, not a clinic. Schedules below are quoted from the clinics and from the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA). Your vet may adjust them for your animal’s age, health and where it came from, and their plan is the one to follow.

The schedule for puppies

Two Kathmandu clinics publish their puppy schedule. They agree on the shape and differ by a week or two on timing.

Age City Pet House BunoPets
6 to 8 weeks DHPPL, first dose DHPPiL, first dose
9 to 10 weeks DHPPL, second dose Coronavirus, first dose
10 to 12 weeks DHPPL, third dose at 12 weeks; coronavirus optional DHPPiL booster; rabies at 12 weeks; coronavirus booster at 12 to 13 weeks
14 to 16 weeks Rabies DHPPiL booster; rabies booster
Every year DHPPL and rabies boosters DHPPiL, rabies and coronavirus boosters

DHPPiL (also written DHPPL) is one injection against five diseases: distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza and leptospirosis. Distemper and parvovirus are the ones that kill puppies in Nepal, and both circulate among street dogs.

Rabies is a separate injection. Rabies is endemic in Nepal and is fatal once symptoms show, in dogs and in people. Every schedule we read includes it.

What the WSAVA guidelines add

The WSAVA guidelines, updated in 2024, are what vets worldwide work from. Three points are worth knowing:

  1. Start at 6 to 8 weeks, then repeat every 2 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks or older. Antibodies from the mother can cancel out an early dose, and nobody can tell by looking which puppies are still covered. Repeating the dose closes that gap.
  2. The dose at 16 weeks or later is the most important one. If a schedule’s last combined vaccine falls at 12 weeks, ask your vet whether one more at 16 weeks makes sense.
  3. If you can only afford one visit, make it at 16 weeks or older, with the core vaccines.

WSAVA also suggests a booster at about 6 months, rather than waiting a full year, to catch any puppy whose earlier doses didn’t take.

The schedule for kittens

Age Vaccine
6 to 8 weeks FVRCP, first dose
10 to 12 weeks FVRCP booster
12 to 16 weeks Rabies, first dose
14 to 16 weeks FVRCP booster
1 year after the first rabies dose Rabies booster

This is the BunoPets schedule, and it matches WSAVA’s recommendation for kittens: start no earlier than 6 weeks and repeat every 3 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks.

FVRCP is the 3-in-1 cat vaccine, also sold in Nepal as Tricat. It covers feline panleukopenia (the cat form of parvo), herpesvirus and calicivirus. Indoor cats need it too: panleukopenia virus comes into the house on shoes.

What it costs in Nepal

Prices vary more for vaccines than for anything else in pet care, because the same injection is given by charities at cost and by private clinics with a consultation and a home visit attached.

Where What Price
HART Nepal (charity) Anti-rabies, dog or cat Rs 150
HART Nepal DHPPiL, dog Rs 300
HART Nepal Tricat, cat Rs 1,000
BunoPets, Kathmandu Puppy course: DHPPiL, coronavirus and rabies, with boosters from Rs 4,500
BunoPets Adult dog boosters: DHPPiL, rabies, coronavirus Rs 2,000
BunoPets Kitten course: FVRCP x 3 and rabies Rs 6,500
BunoPets Adult cat: FVRCP and rabies Rs 2,750
Thulo Bazaar guide FVRCP, per dose Rs 1,500 to 2,500
Thulo Bazaar guide Cat rabies Rs 500 to 1,000

HART’s prices are from the protocol it posted publicly; charities change their rates and their camp dates, so confirm before you travel. BunoPets’ prices were on its site on 5 October 2026 and cover visits at home across Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur. City Pet House asks owners to call for current prices.

So a puppy’s first-year vaccines cost somewhere between about Rs 1,000 at a charity clinic and Rs 4,500 or more at a private one. The injection is the same class of vaccine either way. What you pay extra for is the check-up, the record-keeping and the convenience.

Deworming

Clinics deworm puppies and kittens at the first visit, usually at 6 to 8 weeks, and the dose goes by weight. BunoPets’ five-year dog plan includes weight-based deworming four times a year. Ask your vet which product and how often; a puppy from the street or a crowded litter usually needs it more than once in the first months.

Questions to ask at the first visit

  • Which vaccine was already given, on what date, and can I see the sticker from the vial on the card?
  • When exactly is the next dose, and when is the last puppy or kitten dose?
  • Will the last combined dose fall at 16 weeks or later?
  • When is rabies due, and when is its booster?
  • Until which date should my puppy stay off the street and away from unvaccinated dogs?
  • What should I watch for in the 24 hours after the injection?

Keep the vaccination card. Boarding kennels, groomers, airlines and a vet you have not met before will all ask for it.

Until the course is finished

A puppy is not protected after the first injection. Until about two weeks after the final dose:

  • Carry the puppy outside rather than letting it walk where street dogs go.
  • Let it meet only dogs you know are vaccinated.
  • Wash your hands after touching other dogs.

Parvovirus survives in soil for months. Most puppies that catch it were “only out for a minute”.

Quick answers

At what age should a puppy be vaccinated in Nepal?

Kathmandu clinics start the combined DHPPiL vaccine at 6 to 8 weeks, repeat it every 3 to 4 weeks until 14 to 16 weeks, and give rabies between 12 and 16 weeks. The WSAVA guidelines say the last puppy dose should be at 16 weeks or older.

How much does a dog vaccine cost in Nepal?

It depends where you go. The charity HART Nepal has posted Rs 150 for anti-rabies and Rs 300 for DHPPiL. BunoPets in Kathmandu sells a full puppy course from Rs 4,500 and an adult booster set for Rs 2,000, with home visits.

What vaccines does a kitten need in Nepal?

The core kitten vaccine is the 3-in-1 FVRCP, sometimes sold as Tricat, started at 6 to 8 weeks and repeated every 3 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks, plus rabies from 12 to 16 weeks.

Is rabies vaccination necessary for dogs in Nepal?

Yes. Rabies is endemic in Nepal and is fatal once symptoms appear, in animals and in people. Every clinic schedule we read includes rabies vaccination with a yearly booster.
