Dry dog food in NepalNPR 230 to 1,400 per kg

Ask three shops in Kathmandu what a bag of dog food costs and you get three numbers. The same 400 g pack of Drools was Rs 180 on one site and Rs 380 on another the day we checked. This page puts the prices side by side so you know what is normal before you pay.
Every price below was read off a Nepali shop’s own page on 5 October 2026. Shops change prices often and run offers, so treat these as the going range, not a quote.
The short answer
- Economy (Chappi): about NPR 230 to 300 per kg.
- Mid-range (Drools, Purepet, Reflex, Himalaya, Gemon): about NPR 320 to 500 per kg.
- Upper mid-range (Drools Focus, Dican): about NPR 630 to 830 per kg.
- Premium (Royal Canin, Purina Pro Plan): about NPR 1,065 to 2,000 per kg.
Most dogs in Nepal that eat packaged food eat something from the second group.

| Royal Canin Labrador Retriever | 3 kg | Rs 4,200 | Rs 1,400 | Vanijay |
Three more prices we could confirm only as “from” figures, because the page did not say which pack size the starting price was for: Pedigree Adult Chicken and Vegetables from Rs 1,490, Pedigree Puppy Chicken and Milk from Rs 1,580, and Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach from Rs 4,420, all at Pet Shop Nepal. Vanijay quotes Chappi Adult at NPR 230 to 300 per kg and Royal Canin Labrador Retriever Adult at NPR 1,065 to 1,335 per kg across pack sizes.
Why the same bag has two prices
Pack size. The small pack is the expensive way to buy. Drools Adult works out to Rs 450 or more per kg in the 400 g pack and Rs 319 per kg in the 10 kg bag. If your dog already eats and tolerates a food, the big bag saves about a third.
Who is selling. Daraz listings come from many small sellers competing on price. A shop with a counter, staff and a delivery bike charges more for the same bag. Neither price is wrong.
Offers. “Buy 2 get 1 free” on 400 g packs is common. Work out the per kg price before you decide it is a deal.
Freshness. A very low price on a big bag is sometimes a bag near its expiry date. Look for the “best before” date and the importer’s sticker, and ask the seller if you can’t see them in the photos.
What a month of food costs
How much a dog eats depends on its weight, age and how much it runs around, and every brand prints its own feeding table on the bag. Use that table, not this one, for your own dog. As a planning figure, adult dry food labels usually come out near the amounts below.
| Dog | Dry food a day | A month | On mid-range food | On premium food |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small, about 5 kg | about 90 g | 2.7 kg | Rs 900 to 1,200 | Rs 2,900 to 3,800 |
| Medium, about 15 kg | about 220 g | 6.6 kg | Rs 2,100 to 2,800 | Rs 7,000 to 9,200 |
| Large, about 30 kg | about 380 g | 11.4 kg | Rs 3,600 to 4,900 | Rs 12,100 to 16,000 |
“Mid-range” here is Rs 320 to 430 per kg, which is Drools, Purepet or Reflex bought in 3 kg bags or larger. “Premium” is Rs 1,065 to 1,400 per kg, the range for Royal Canin breed food. These monthly figures are our arithmetic from the prices above, not a quote from any shop.
Puppies eat more for their size than adults and need puppy food, which costs the same or a little more per kg.
Wet food and home food
Wet food is sold by the pouch or tin and costs far more per meal. A 150 g pouch of Drools gravy was Rs 120 on Daraz and a 415 g tin of Gemon chunks was Rs 300. Most owners use it as a topping or a treat, not as the whole diet.
Plenty of dogs in Nepal eat rice with meat, eggs or curd cooked at home. That can work, but a home diet is easy to get wrong for a growing puppy. If you cook for your dog, ask your vet what to add. And keep these off the plate entirely: chocolate, grapes and raisins, onions and garlic, cooked bones, and anything sweetened with xylitol.
Before you buy
- Check the date. Dry food keeps for months sealed, but only weeks once opened. Buy a bag your dog finishes in four to six weeks.
- Match the life stage. Puppy, adult and senior foods are different recipes, not different labels.
- Change slowly. Mix the new food into the old over about a week. A sudden switch is the usual cause of an upset stomach.
- Add delivery. Pet Shop Nepal, for example, charges Rs 100 inside Kathmandu Valley and delivers free on orders over Rs 3,000. A cheap bag with a delivery fee is not always the cheap bag.
- Know who you are paying. If a page asks for the full amount in advance to a personal account, ask for cash on delivery instead.
